Relative Clauses

Relativsätze

Relative clauses describe nouns using relative pronouns:

RELATIVE PRONOUNS:
Nominative: der/die/das/die
Accusative: den/die/das/die
Dative: dem/der/dem/denen

The relative pronoun matches the gender/number of the noun it refers to.
The verb goes to the END of the relative clause.
Examples
Der Mann, der dort steht, ist mein Lehrer.
The man who stands there is my teacher.
Das Buch, das ich lese, ist interessant.
The book that I read is interesting.
Die Frau, der ich helfe, ist krank.
The woman whom I help is sick.
Tip:
The case of the relative pronoun depends on its role in the relative clause, not the main clause!
